So what's this Transformers Bootleg business, anyway?

Transformers Bootleg is a Transformers fanzine I'm putting together for BotCon 2005. It's an homage to the days of Xeroxed Do-It-Yourself fan media, and as such it's being published in a black and white, 8 1/2"x 11" format. I am hoping to be able to distribute it free at the show.

How do I get involved?

Right now what I really need is fan contributions. I have plenty of help already with publishing and distribution, and I'm an old hand at fanzine editing and layout, but I need contributions!

Okay, then, what kind of contributions?

I'll take pretty much anything. Art, fanfic, essays, fancharacter profiles, pretty much anything that'll look okay spit out of a photocopier. I don't have a theme that I'm insisting everyone follow, but as you can see by the logo I'm going with a general punk theme for the design, and you're more than welcome to embrace that.

What are your guidelines for art contributions?

The most important thing is that all art has to be either B&W or at least greyscale. Lineart will look the best. And keep in mind that it will be printed letter-page size at the largest, so if you have a large, super-detailed drawing be sure you're happy with how it looks at that size. I can take files in any format that Word 2003 can understand.

And text contributions?

Because I'm trying to keep this free, ideally text should be no more than 5-6 pages or so, but either you or I can mess with the font to scrunch things down. Short essays would be great from a layout point of view, so if all you have to say is a few paragraphs, go for it. Plain .txt files would be best, but if you have some formatting that really needs to be in there, go ahead and send me an .rtf or a .doc.

Can I advertise my web site?

You're free to put your site URL in your contribution, but I'd prefer not to have entire contributions that exist only to advertise someone's eBay store. However, in keeping with the communal spirit of the project, I'll be happy to run little ads for community sites seperate from normal contributions.

What about porn?

No porn.

When do you want this stuff by?

I'd like to have all contributions by September 9th. What with full-time work and 6 credits worth of school, I'll be pretty busy before then, but after the 9th I'll have a couple weeks between Summer and Autumn quarters to get everything finalized and printed. I'll be slowly piecing it together as I get more stuff, but that's the definite cutoff date.

Will this be available anywhere after BotCon?

Since I'll be assembling the zine as a PDF file for printing, I've decided to put it up online after the convention in that format so people can download it and print themselves a copy exactly like the one that'll be available at the show. Woo!

How do I send you stuff or ask you questions?

You can click on the graphic to the left to e-mail me, or just send it to trixter-at-gmail-dot-com. If I get asked anything a lot I'll probably update this with an answer.

So what makes you so awesome to get to do this, anyway?

Back in the old days I used to do a TF fanzine called Roll Out!, so I'm a bit of an expert on the old TF fanzine community. More recently I've helped out at OTFCC the last couple years, including organizing the art room and contest last year. Which, dare I say, seems to be a little lacking in love this year, which was a lot of my inspiration for this project. I want to put some fan love into this convention and give everybody a chance to be heard. I wrote an article on G2 Go-Bots for the OTFCClub magazine, and I also served as head editor on the Allspark's Robots in Disguise: Battle Protocol project a couple years ago.

That's it! Show's over! Go home!
